Again, a song inspired by the Civil War... about young men the night before they go to war... about the fact there should have been little difference between them, whatever the side they fought for.
There's a little hope at the end, because there's always been some solidarity among ordinary soldiers, but the key phrase of the song is "there's no hope on the battlefront and your names will soon be forgotten". 'cause that's what's happened.
